Flatwater (Sprint) Racing is one of the best-known competitive canoeing disciplines in Australia. This is probably due to its inclusion in the Olympic Games since 1936 and Australia's involvement in all Olympic Sprints since the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Flatwater Racing is all about speed on flat water, over distances of 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 metres. The craft that have developed are sleek and fast but unstable. K1, K2 and K4 are the most popular classes of Flatwater kayaking but there are also canoe classes of C1, C2 and C4. Both men and women compete in both kayaks and in canoes.
The club is active to a small extent in sprint racing at the state and national level, with a renewal of interest in kneeling C-class paddlers. Club members compete at state and national championships and at the Grand Prix events held through out the season.
The PNSW Sprint Series is mostly conducted at the SIRC, Penrith and is now open to a range of kayaks, ski’s and SUP’s.
